Elita is wrapping up her fourth year as a Psychology student at University of Leeds – three years of studying, alongside pursuing her love for dance and a placement year. Elita took a corporate placement last year after figuring out the traditional psychologist route wasn’t for her, yet this, again, showed her what she didn’t want to do. Working within a huge international organisation didn’t allow her to make real societal impact, it just didn’t spark her interests, namely being diverse and inclusive. This is when her careers tutor pointed her in Spark’s direction, and Elita haven’t looked back since.

Elita’s journey with Spark led to the creation of InclusiFits, an inclusive dancewear brand championing Black and Brown dancers. As a lifelong dancer, being mixed-race herself, Elita has struggled to find her identity reflected in the dance costuming, with shade ranges often catering for a Eurocentric majority. Through combining two integral parts of her life – dance and diversity – this underrepresentation is something she knew she wanted to change. Not only does Elita intend to give racially minoritised dancers a greater platform for their voices to be amplified, but through representing this demographic, she can encourage more dancers of colour into the space. Therefore, InclusiFits becomes more than just a dancewear brand but a movement in the dance space towards racial equity.

‘Currently, I am finalising the first products and have initiated a social media campaign, alongside setting up a waitlist for the product launch (a line of inclusive tights – though this is still under wraps!). Post-university, I intend to partner with dance schools nationwide to discuss how InclusiFits can improve their diversity; my first partnership has already been secured back in my hometown. I’ve planned workshops with this dance school to teach dance routines rooted in Black and minoritised cultures, sharing the rich histories behind these styles. Moreover, I have been invited in to be a guest speaker at a professional dance school here in Leeds, to talk about all things InclusiFits and diversity. Again, InclusiFits is not just about selling clothes but representing the unheard voices.’

Looking ahead, Elita’s aim is to officially launch InclusiFits’ first products by the end of the year and be well underway with working with dance schools. Her long-term goals include being able to work with professional dance schools to secure scholarships for underrepresented dancers, to increase their access into the professional industry, and having a large range of products that cater to minoritised dancers.

‘Spark has been a cornerstone of InclusiFits and my personal development, enhancing my confidence in pitching ideas and connecting me with influential mentors and other business owners.’

The expansive Spark network has been crucial in refining her business ideas and learning new skills. Spark’s financial support has also been pivotal, helping establish InclusiFits website, procure samples and soon, aid the initial stock order. Starting a business alongside completing university has not been easy, but with Spark and the amazing support, they have helped develop Elita’s ideas into reality.
